2008 Summer Focus Weeks
- Spirited Walker (R), with Carolyn Scott Kortge: June 15 - 22, 2008. Don't just take a walk. Take a spirited walk. It's a creative exercise. It's play. It's exciting. It's a way of turning an everyday walk into a journey of endless variety, awakening the sense of connection between you and your environment. Carolyn Scott Kortge, author of The Spirited Walker wants you to stretch not only your legs, but your imagination, letting your surroundings elicit memories, thoughts, and feelings straight from the heart.
- Dance Week, with Dance-a-thon: June 29 - July 6, 2008. Don a colorful costume, trip the Light Fantastic in taps, and slither through a sensuous belly dance. Sway to island Calypso or interpret the riffs of a jazz combo. Join a hilarious chorus line learning the Broadway-style choreography of Yuichi Sugiyama. Then, get in line for our “Dance-A-Thon”. As a form of self-expression and communication, dancing is a powerful emotional and spiritual outlet. As exercise, it provides all the essential components of a complete aerobic workout, improving endurance, balance, strength, flexibility and core stability. Our Golden Door staff always gives this week a rhythm and flow all its own.
- The Art of Creative Play: July 6 - July 13, 2008.
Remember when summer meant being able to go out and play every day?
Remember when the joy was in the doing and not in the results? Bring
the art of play and the playfulness of art back into your life. It requires
absolutely no experience; it's easy, spontaneous, and fun! You'll love this
special week because creative play stimulates the senses and enhances
your mental processes. But mostly you’ll love it because the kid in you
wants to go out and play!
- Inner Door Week, with Ann Harriet Buck: July 20 - 27, 2008. The subtle, yet powerful Inner Door program is exclusive to the Golden Door. Program founder, Annharriet Buck, guides you through exercises in the arts of meditation and introspection. This summer's program includes the latest research into “Positive Psychology”; the study of our ability to cultivate positive emotions and, quite literally, create happiness. Sharpen your insight while working on solutions to life's challenges in the supportive company of a Wise Woman Circle. Replace the “inner chatter” with the sounds of nature on a silent Meditation Hike. Astonish yourself with the clarity that lies just below the surface of your consciousness during daily Dream Sharing. This week will quiet your mind, open your eyes, and warm your heart.
- Labyrinth Week, with Lauren Artress: August 3 - 10, 2008. Based on the spirals found in nature, the labyrinth transcends religious and cultural traditions. It is a tool to quiet the mind, find balance, and seek insight. Native Americans call it the Medicine Wheel. The Celts described it as the Never Ending Circle. It is called the Kabala in mystical Judaism. Whatever it's name, all labyrinths share one path leading the walker to its center. The Golden Door labyrinth is a replica of the 11-circuit pattern laid in the stone floor of Chartres Cathedral in France. To those who come to walk it this week, the Reverend Dr. Lauren Artress, founder of Veriditas, the Voice of the Labyrinth, offers fascinating lessons in how this ancient tradition has aided our search for enlightenment. Walking alone and in groups, at dawn and by candlelight, the power of the labyrinth will lead you to a greater understanding of yourself.
- Water Week: August 24 - 31, 2008. Do we save the best for last? Fans of our Water Week think so! It seems like the more fun you have this week, the more fit you may become. Water exercise adds a resistance factor to your workouts not possible on land. Whether you prefer to get into the water up to your knees or over your head, we have classes for you. Swim Clinics can be customized to help you learn to swim, improve your technique, or train you for competition. Choose from a variety of water classes that provide a cardiovascular workout, increase your strength and balance, and improve flexibility. And don't forget water volleyball! Dog-paddler or distance swimmer, our Golden Door staff will make sure this is your wettest, wildest summer ever!
